Why I Love This Salsa Recipe

Restaurant-style salsa may sound like something you would normally grab at the store — maybe even termed “cantina-style” — but once you see how easy it is to make at home, there really is no going back. Everything gets tossed into the food processor, pulsed a few times, and just like that, you have a salsa that tastes fresh, full of flavor, and exactly like the kind you love to eat at a restaurant.

This recipe has all the things I want in a good salsa: fire-roasted tomatoes, lots of fresh cilantro, bright lime juice, and jalapeño to give it a little kick. It’s thinner and so much more flavorful than most store-bought versions, and that little bit of ketchup at the end ties it all together. Serve it with chips, spoon it into a taco, or put it next to brunch (such as my huevos rancheros egg bites!). It fits just about anywhere.

Here’s why you need to make this salsa:

  • Takes only about 10 minutes to prepare.
  • You can easily adjust the heat level.
  • Classic restaurant-style texture and taste thanks to a secret ingredient.
  • Perfect for parties, taco night, or just a snack.
  • Simple ingredients that make it easy to make whenever there’s a craving.

Restaurant-Style Salsa Ingredients

There are only 8 ingredients needed to make this salsa recipe:

  • Onion – Adds both flavor and depth.
  • Garlic – A must-have for a classic salsa flavor.
  • Jalapeño – Adds fresh heat and can be adjusted to your liking.
  • Cilantro – Gives the salsa its bright, fresh finish.
  • Kosher salt – Seasons everything and ties the flavors together.
  • Fire-roasted tomatoes – Traditionally, non-fire-roasted tomatoes are used, but these add a smokiness that I love in salsa. You can use either whole or diced varieties.
  • Lime juice – Adds brightness while also balancing out the tomato.
  • Ketchup – A bit of a surprise ingredient, but trust me on this one! It rounds everything out with a small amount of sweetness and added thickness.

The full amount of each ingredient can be found in the recipe card below.

How to Make This Salsa Recipe

There are 3 easy steps to this recipe, all in a food processor:

Step 1: Pulse the aromatics – In a food processor, combine the onion, garlic, jalapeño, cilantro, and salt. Pulse 4-6 times, until everything is broken down but not completely pureed.

Step 2: Add the tomatoes – Drain the fire-roasted tomatoes in a colander, reserving the juice. Add the drained tomatoes and lime juice to the food processor. Pulse about 5 times, until the mixture reaches a salsa consistency.

Ways to Adjust the Recipe

  • Slightly smoother finish – Pulse a few extra times just before serving.
  • Milder salsa – Remove the jalapeño seeds.
  • Spicier salsa – Leave in the seeds or add more jalapeño.
  • Thinner restaurant-style consistency – Add more of the reserved tomato juice.

Step 3: Finish and serve – Add the ketchup and pulse 2 times to combine. Serve immediately with tortilla chips or alongside your favorite Mexican-inspired meal.

Recipe Tips

  • Control the heat – Remove the jalapeño seeds for a milder salsa, or leave them in if you want more spice.
  • Do not over-process – A few pulses go a long way. Keeping some texture gives this salsa that classic restaurant-style feel.
  • Drain the tomatoes first – This helps you control the consistency from the start instead of ending up with a salsa that is too thin.
  • Let the flavors sit – Even though this salsa can be served right away, it gets even better after resting for 15-30 minutes.

Serving & Storage

Serving – Once the salsa has been pulsed together, let it sit for 15-30 minutes to let the flavors meld. Then serve with plenty of tortilla chips and let everyone dig in. It’s the perfect addition to tacos, burrito bowls, or served alongside grilled chicken or fajitas.

For a casual summer party, I love to set it out with guacamole and a cold drink (probably a spicy margarita!) on the back patio. Easy and inviting!

Storage – Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. Give it a stir before serving, since some liquid may separate as it sits. I wouldn’t recommend freezing this salsa, as it’s best when made fresh (or within a few days).
