Why I Love This Taco Seasoning Recipe
When it comes to making your own seasoning blends at home, there’s one that will probably be the most used: taco seasoning! And that’s because there are endless ways to use it, from adding it to meat to sprinkling it on veggies.
You may be wondering why I would ever promote making your own taco seasoning at home. I get it, and it’s a totally fair question. While I love to make so many things at home (you know I’m an avid canner and preservationist), spice blends can be super easy to buy in the store. But I love to have the ability to control exactly what goes into my food, and you can do just that with this blend.
Everything is totally customizable when you mix it together at home. From the level of red pepper flakes to the amount (and type!) of paprika, it’s all up to you. That said, I would suggest trying out my recipe first because I think it’s a pretty good mixture!
Trust me, once you try this blend, those store-bought packets will never even cross your mind again!

Taco Seasoning Blend Ingredients
The beauty of this taco seasoning is that it requires simple pantry staples that are probably already in your spice drawer: chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes.
Here are a few specific modifications to think about:
- Add some smoked paprika if you want a bit of deeper, smoky flavor.
- Adjust the red pepper flakes depending on your personal heat preference.
- Personally, I leave out kosher salt and black pepper because I want to be able to control the levels when using this blend for a recipe.

How to Make Taco Seasoning Blend
Making this taco seasoning couldn’t be easier! You simply need to combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl and mix. Make sure there are no clumps and everything is well incorporated.
For a finer texture: Add the ingredients to a spice grinder or small food processor and pulse everything together. But I find it works perfectly as is.
To make a larger batch: Simply double or triple the recipe. Just maintain the same proportions, and you’ll have consistent results every time.

Serving & Storage + Tips
To serve: This versatile taco seasoning is a perfect spice blend to add to your kitchen and works in so many recipes! Here are a few ways that I love to use it:
- Add a few tablespoons to ground beef, chicken, or turkey for classic taco meat.
- Stir into Greek yogurt or sour cream to make a quick taco dip.
- Sprinkle over roasted vegetables before they go in the oven.
- Mix into scrambled eggs for a Mexican-inspired breakfast.
- Stir into rice while cooking for some additional flavor.
- Rub onto chicken breasts, pork, or shrimp before grilling.
- Mix into burgers before grilling.
To store: Keep your seasoning blend in an airtight container and store in a cool, dark place like your spice cabinet. It should stay fresh for up to 6 months!
Label your jar with the date so you know when it’s time to make a fresh batch. The flavors are most vibrant in the first 3 months.
