Why I Love This Cocktail

During the summer months, there’s nothing better than sipping a delicious cocktail in the backyard. And while I love a good Aperol spritz, I sometimes crave something a bit softer and a little more floral.

This drink hits all the right notes: it’s bubbly, light, and subtly sweetened with herbal notes. And it’s almost too easy to make.

The elderflower liqueur gives this cocktail a unique flavor, while fresh mint adds brightness and balance. This is exactly the kind of cocktail I like to serve when the garden is bursting with herbs (you know I’m always looking for ways to use up mint!) and the evenings stretch on longer than you expect.

Whether you’re hosting friends or relaxing on the patio after a day in the yard, this spritz feels like a little celebration in a glass.

Here’s why you’ll love it:

  • Floral and light with just the right touch of sweetness
  • Quick to mix up with no special tools needed
  • More refreshing in flavor than many cocktails
  • A beautiful way to use up fresh mint from the garden

Hugo Spritz vs. Aperol Spritz

While both drinks fall under the “spritz” family and share that wonderful bubbly base, the flavor profiles are very different. The Aperol spritz is bold and bittersweet with a distinctive orange hue, thanks to its namesake aperitif. The Hugo spritz, on the other hand, leans floral and herbal, making it a softer, more delicate option.

If you’re looking for a low-effort cocktail that feels elegant and fresh, the Hugo is your summer go-to.

Hugo Spritz Ingredients

Here’s everything you need to mix up this easy, garden-fresh spritz:

  • Elderflower liqueur – This adds the signature floral sweetness that defines the Hugo spritz. I love to use St-Germain in this cocktail.
  • Mint sprigs – One for muddling to release oils, and one for garnish to bring that fresh, herbal aroma.
  • Sparkling wine – A dry Prosecco is classic, bringing effervescence and structure.
  • Sparkling water – Lightens the drink and adds more refreshing fizz.
  • Lime wheel – A pop of color and a subtle citrus note.

The full amount of each ingredient can be found in the recipe card below.

How to Make a Hugo Spritz

Once your ingredients are chilled and ready, it takes just 5 minutes to make this cocktail:

Muddle – In a glass, muddle together the elderflower liqueur and 1 mint sprig to release the mint’s aroma.

Mix – Fill the glass with ice. Pour in the sparkling wine and sparkling water. Stir to combine everything.

Garnish – With the remaining sprig of mint and a lime wheel. You can use whatever citrus you like!

Serving & Storage

To serve: Serve the Hugo spritz in a stemmed wine glass for a classic look. It pairs beautifully with light summer fare, such as fresh cheeses, bruschetta, or a simple charcuterie board.

To store: This cocktail is best made fresh, but you can prep the mint and lime wheels ahead of time and chill all your ingredients so they’re ready to go when guests arrive.
