Why I Love This Dressing

A salad with grilled chicken and summer produce deserves a dressing that ties it all together. This creamy BBQ ranch dressing is the answer, with all of the familiar flavor of buttermilk ranch, lots of fresh herbs, and prepared BBQ sauce that complements all of the flavors coming off the grill.

I love how the pairing of Greek yogurt and mayonnaise creates a creamy base, while lemon juice keeps all of the flavors bright. And the whole thing comes together easily with a bowl and a whisk!

Fresh herbs, buttermilk, and BBQ sauce create a creamy dressing that brings classic ranch flavor and barbecue sweetness to your favorite salad.

Here’s what to love:

  • Fresh basil, dill, and parsley add plenty of herbal flavor—great for summer when they’re plentiful in the garden and at the market.
  • Greek yogurt and mayonnaise create a creamy base.
  • No ranch seasoning packet or blender needed! I’d call that a win-win.

BBQ Ranch Dressing Ingredients

You’re sure to have most of the necessary ingredients already on hand:

  • Fresh basil, dill, and parsley – Dill and parsley bring classic ranch dressing flavor, while basil adds a sweeter note.
  • Shallot and garlic – Add lots of savory flavor; make sure to mince both finely so they blend into the dressing.
  • Kosher salt and black pepper – Season the dressing.
  • Lemon juice – Brightens the creamy base and balances out the sweetness of the BBQ sauce.
  • Buttermilk – Adds tang and helps to thin out the dressing a bit so it’s easy to drizzle on a salad.
  • Greek yogurt and mayonnaise – Work together for a smooth, creamy texture.
  • Prepared BBQ sauce – Use one you enjoy (I love Kinder’s). Remember, the one you choose will affect the sweetness, smokiness, or heat and shape the finished flavor.

The full amount of each ingredient can be found in the recipe card below.

How to Make BBQ Ranch Dressing

The best part of this recipe: there’s just 1 step to put it all together!

Whisk the dressing – In a bowl, combine the basil, dill, parsley, shallot, garlic, salt, black pepper, lemon juice, buttermilk, Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, and BBQ sauce. Whisk until evenly combined. Serve right away or cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

Recipe Tips

  • Mince everything finely – That way, all of the small pieces of herbs, shallot, and garlic distribute evenly in each bite.
  • Choose your BBQ sauce with intention – A sweet sauce makes a sweeter dressing, while a spicy sauce adds heat. It’s completely up to you, but I usually opt for a sweeter sauce.
  • Adjust the consistency if needed – For a thinner dressing, whisk in a little extra buttermilk, one teaspoon at a time. If you like it thicker, leave out some of the buttermilk or amp up the mayonnaise.
