Orange espresso tonic is a refreshing 3-ingredient drink made with espresso, tonic water, and orange juice. It’s bold, citrusy, and the perfect midday pick-me-up.

Why I’m In Love with This Espresso Tonic
I first tried a version of this orange espresso tonic drink on a recent trip to New York City. I’ll be honest: I was apprehensive. But the idea of mixing tonic and espresso sounded so unique that I couldn’t resist.
Spoiler alert: I fell in love with this drink!
The key, though, is the tonic. Tonic water is a slightly bitter, carbonated drink that is slightly sweetened. And the reason it works with espresso is that it balances out the bold flavor of espresso while adding just the right amount of sweetness.
Traditionally, espresso tonics have a citrus twist. This recipe uses a squeeze of orange juice. The mixture may be something new for you, but if you like espresso drinks, this may be your new favorite.
Here’s why you’ll love it, too:
- You only need 3 ingredients. Four, if you count the ice. No syrups or fancy tools required.
- It’s naturally refreshing. The citrus and bubbles cut the bitterness of the espresso, making this a crisp, clean way to enjoy coffee.
- Perfect for warm weather. Think of it as an afternoon pick-me-up that feels like a cocktail but keeps you caffeinated.

Orange Espresso Tonic Ingredients
This drink has only 3 ingredients you probably already have:
- Freshly brewed espresso – The bold, concentrated flavor holds up against the tonic and citrus. Use a good-quality espresso or a strong coffee concentrate.
- Tonic water – This adds the signature bitterness and effervescence. Choose a high-quality tonic for the cleanest flavor.
- Fresh orange juice – Just a splash adds brightness and ties the whole drink together with a subtle sweetness. You can play around with the amount and add more or less depending on how you like it.
- Optional: Orange slice – For a polished finish.
The full amount of each ingredient can be found in the recipe card below.

How to Make an Espresso Tonic
This drink comes together in under 5 minutes:
- Fill a glass with ice and add the tonic water. Add 8 ounces or more, depending on your glass size.
- Add a splash of orange juice. About a tablespoon will give the drink a bright, citrusy base.
- Slowly pour the espresso over the top. This creates that beautiful layered effect.

Recipe Tips
- Use cold ingredients. Chilled tonic and orange juice help preserve the fizz and keep the ice from melting too fast.
- Brew espresso fresh. Let it cool at least slightly so it doesn’t instantly melt the ice.
- Taste and adjust. If you want it a bit more citrus-forward, add a bit more orange. If you prefer less bitterness, use a lightly sweetened tonic.
Serving & Storage
Serve immediately. This drink is best right after it’s made, while the bubbles are still fresh.
Don’t store leftovers. Since tonic water goes flat and espresso can turn bitter, this drink isn’t ideal for making ahead. Mix it fresh each time for the best flavor.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can! Cold brew will give a mellower flavor. Just make sure it’s strong enough to stand up to the tonic.
Fresh-squeezed is best, but bottled juice works in a pinch.
It’s lightly sweet from the orange juice, but mostly crisp and slightly bitter. Think of it more like a sparkling coffee than a sweet iced latte.

I’m a big fan of yours… and, share your recipes often. But, I’ve never reviewed one until now.
I’m also an adventurous eater/drinker. So, I was quite curious about this drink. No one else would try it… And, I must say that now that I’ve done it, I probably won’t do it again, unfortunately, unless maybe if I add vodka. LOL. I did drink it all though. Just a little too odd.
Thank you for sharing it, though! I’m always up for trying new things! ❤️🔥🍽️🥂
Was skeptical
I was wrong as this is so delicious and refreshing
