Why I Love This Ham Recipe

Ham is probably one of the most traditional main dishes to serve for Easter, and there’s a good reason: it’s so easy to prepare. Since ham is usually cured when purchased, the preparation typically involves preparing a glaze and heating the entire dish in the oven.

Once ready to serve, the ham is sliced into individual pieces. But this recipe makes things even easier with boneless ham quarters. Before the glaze is layered over the ham, I love to slice the ham into pieces and arrange everything in a baking dish. Once the glaze is warmed through, it’s poured over the top of the slices and placed in the oven to heat. Talk about an easy but beautiful main dish

The ham can be prepared right before you’re ready to heat it through, or it can be assembled in the baking dish and placed in the oven until it’s time to heat it through. And the orange chipotle glaze that’s drizzled on top adds such a depth of complex flavor.

No one has to know how easy this main dish was to prepare!

Chipotle Glazed Ham Ingredients

This glaze is sweet, smoky, and just a little spicy, and it comes together with everyday ingredients.

  • Cured ham quarters – Already cooked and easy to slice, making prep a breeze.
  • Orange marmalade – Slightly bitter, slightly sweet, and the base of that sticky glaze.
  • Honey – Adds warmth and helps the glaze thicken as it bakes.
  • Chipotle peppers in adobo – Smoky, rich, and just enough heat to wake things up.
  • Fresh rosemary – Brings a hint of freshness to balance the glaze.
  • Orange juice – Brightens the glaze and brings everything together.

How to Make Chipotle Glazed Ham

The best part about ham is how easy it is to make! That’s why there are just three steps to create this chipotle glazed version:

Step 1: Make the glaze. In a small saucepan, combine orange marmalade and honey. Add chopped chipotle peppers, rosemary, and orange juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook 3–5 minutes until thickened.

Step 2: Prep and bake the ham. Slice the ham into ¼-inch pieces and layer them in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Pour the glaze over the top and garnish with rosemary, if desired. Cover the dish with parchment and foil, then bake at 325°F for 20–25 minutes.

Step 3: Finish under the broiler. Uncover and broil for 2–3 minutes to get some browning on top.

Pro Tips

  • Slice before baking. It makes serving easier and helps the glaze soak into every piece.
  • Use parchment under foil. This prevents foil from touching the food directly and keeps flavors clean.
  • Baste during baking. Spoon a little extra glaze over the top before broiling for added shine and moisture.

Serving and Storage

Serving: Once heated through, serve the ham warm, straight from the oven. It pairs perfectly with side dishes, like my creamed peas and lemon ricotta mashed potatoes. Add a simple salad and you’re ready to go!

Storage: Place any leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate. The ham will stay fresh for 3-5 days. It reheats well for sandwiches or quick meals throughout the week. To freeze, wrap tightly and place in the freezer for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

Reheating: Place the sliced ham in a baking dish, cover with foil, and warm in a 325°F oven for 15–20 minutes, or until heated through. Add a splash of water or extra glaze before baking to keep it moist. For just a few slices, a quick warm-up in a skillet over low heat works great too. For small portions, place ham slices on a microwave-safe plate, lay a damp paper towel on top, and heat in 30-second intervals until warmed through.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good alternative to reduce the spice in this glaze?

Smoked paprika is a great substitute, as it contains no spice.

Can this be prepared in advance?

Of course. This dish is essentially just being reheated anyway, so you can slice the ham, cover it with glaze, and refrigerate until it’s time to cook.
