The countdown to Christmas is in full swing! Thanksgiving having been a week later in November has made December fly by at The Farm. Christmas every year seems to come quicker and quicker with advertising always seeming to start the season sooner. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving is hardly enjoyed anymore. Thankfully I was able to travel to Virginia with my mom to spend the holiday with my sister, her husband, and my two adorable and ever-so-energetic nieces. Usually I am not someone who wants to travel for holidays, but Thanksgiving is a great time to get away. The farm work has subsided with freezing temperatures.
Virginia gave us time to spend long evenings together and the whole day on Thanksgiving preparing the meal together. This year we had a smoked turkey, roasted carrots and brussel sprouts, The Gray Boxwood’s homemade bread and cranberry sauce, cornbread and sausage stuffing, apple and lettuce salad with an amazing dijon vinaigrette, and of course the ultimate classic pecan pie. I enjoy having a low-key Thanksgiving with immediate family. To be special, holidays do not always have to be a lot of work with loads of guests. Sometimes the most low-key are the most memorable.
My mother and I were also able to spend some quality time making cutout cookies with the girls. Having a four- and two-year old helping in the kitchen is a new experience and while my patience and perfection were tested, the memories made were well worth it! The girls loved the shapes and of course loved being taste testers even more!
In The Farm news, The Gray Boxwood co-founder, Joel, has moved to The Farm in Iowa! I think moving from Los Angeles to southeast Iowa was not only a shock weather-wise, but culturally as well. Hopefully, in upcoming months you all can hear about Joel’s move and adjustment to the frigid new landscape. You are already enjoying Joel’s handywork with our Christmas videos (he is the director and editor).
My hope is we are helping you create beautiful and memorable holidays in your homes as well, using our recipes and quick tips to ensure you and your family are spending the most time together. Happy Christmas from The Gray Boxwood Farm![hr]
